Country music star Chely Wright recently came out of the closet on the cover of PEOPLE and stopped by ‘Today’ (weekdays, 7AM ET on NBC) to talk about her struggles with her sexuality.

“Because I hit rock bottom, I had a 9 millimeter gun in my mouth,” Wright said. “I was taking inventory of my life and I realized I had these pieces of my life that I just couldn’t get intersect. I was living a secret life and I was very much a country music celebrity and I saw no way to get those to coexist.”

Wright said she gave up hope and was ready to take her own life, but she said crying helped break her dam of emotions and prayers guided her through the difficult time.
