Drama Mama: Summer vacation ends at ‘Melrose’

Melrose_Place.jpg

It’s not quite the kickoff of the new season for the big guys, but the fringe networks are (as usual) getting a head start and drama lovers benefit. Here are this week’s early returns:

90210” and “Melrose Place” (Tuesday, 8 p.m. and 9 p.m., CW)
The CW is the first to jump into the pile of autumn leaves with a slew of premieres, including something called “The Vampire Diaries” on Thursday which Mama is too old to watch. However, the T-shirt-under-the-sundress-1990s live again with the second season of “90210,” followed by the premiere of the revamped “Melrose Place.” Mama’s going to be honest here: The vapid, anorexic “90210″ chicks bore, but “Melrose” has a chance because it seems more closely tied to its historic characters. Sure, there won’t be an appearance by Heather Locklear’s uber-bitchy Amanda Woodward (at least anytime soon), but for Mama’s money nobody was more delightful than Thomas Calabro’s nasty Dr. Michael Mancini, who will appear tonight as the father of one of the new tenants of this ill-fated address. Reserve a seat for Mama poolside, people.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Premiere Preview

Get the tissues ready.

The first promo for the upcoming season premiere of “Grey’s Anatomy” has arrived.

Between the sad tears viewers will shed during the impending funeral for George O’Malley (T.R. Knight’s exit from the Seattle Grace set has been confirmed) and the apparent rebirth of Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl), who flatlined at the end of last season’s finale, it looks like Sept. 24 is going to be one big emotional rollercoaster.

Drama Mama: Daytime Emmys

Need your weekly drama fix? Mama has some suggestions. Here is what to look for this week:

Daytime Emmy Awards” (Sunday, 8 p.m., CW)
After a long, bumpy production road on which all the networks passed on airing this perpetually low-rated kudofest, the Daytime Emmys finds a home at the CW. And despite not being in the daytime drama game itself, the CW promises to honor the soaps and not just fill two hours with Ellen and Regis. Expect a tribute to departing sudser “Guiding Light” as well as some surprises in the top category wins, since a lot of obvious actors and shows weren’t even nominated. Vanessa Williams hosts, no doubt bringing her own drama with her.

Keepin’ It ‘Real’: ‘Three’s a Crowd’

By Anthony Sulla-Heffinger

Let me start off by saying that I was really looking forward to this episode, as the eventual threesome between Pat, Jonna and Ayiiia could have made this episode one of the most memorable not only in Cancun, but also in all of “Real World.” But it wasn’t.

It’s no secret that Ayiiia likes to experiment, as her fling with Emilee proved earlier on this season. But her relationship back home was fleshed out a little more in this episode. Her boyfriend back home is named Ryan, and they have a bit of an on-again/off-again relationship.

Laying all of the cards on the table may have been a theme for Ayiiia this week, as she reveals that she also has an infatuation with Jonna, putting her amongst a group that consists of CJ, Matt, Kirk and Pat. Ayiiia bets her friends from home, who were so blah that they may as well have stayed home, that she will hook up with Jonna.

There’s only one small problem: Pat.

Drama Mama: See you next summer

Summer’s coming to an end, and so too are most of the cable series that kept us entertained between the regular network TV seasons. Here are the highlights of season finales this week:

Nurse Jackie” (Monday, 10:30 p.m., Showtime)
In Monday’s season ender, Jackie’s juggling of her job, pill-providing lover Eddie, and now not-so-secret family comes to a head. The tonal problems of this series, which vacillated a little too clumsily between drama and comedy, kept it from being at the top of Mama’s must-watch list. But you have to admit: Edie Falco’s frank, stripped-down performance dispelled all memories of Carmela and make her a shoo-in for another lead actress Emmy nomination next year…it’s just a question of which category.
