Lost: Finale Part I – Awakenings

As if we needed reminding that this was The End, the first shot of the very last Lost was of a coffin! So symbolic! So sad! So very fitting considering this show started with Daddy Issues, and now it would end with them!

So we saw each character in …

‘Breaking Bad’ – ‘Abiquiu’ Recap

In many ways, last week’s ‘Breaking Bad’ was a pause in the action. The one on one between Jesse and Walt in the lab, the introspection, the fly — the claustrophobia of it all was deceptive. With this episode, there was a lot a movement, revelations and possibly a game changing development that could wipe out all the progress Walt’s made to regain his life.

What to Watch: TV Picks for May 31-June 6

Filed under:

MONDAY, MAY 31
‘Bret Michaels: Life As I Know It’ (10PM, VH1)
This reality series isn’t officially scheduled to debut until fall 2010, but, given the resilient rocker’s crop of headline-making activities lately, VH1 decided to drop a sneak peek in now. Far from his ‘Rock of Love’ days, ‘Life As I Know It’ focuses on Michaels’ home life with daughters Raine and Jorja and on-again/off-again girlfriend (and babymama) Kristi in their Scottsdale, Arizona home. We’ll also get a glimpse at his hectic career life, which, as we all know, was interrupted recently by a string of serious health woes. We’re guessing the show will also feature his many comebacks — winning ‘Celebrity Apprentice 3,’ surprising viewers by popping up on the ‘American Idol’ season finale and surprising everyone by continuing his tour last week — though we can’t be the only ones who’d feel better if he’d just take a little vacay, right?

The Cooking Channel – Another whole network for foodies? Yep. The Food Network’s new sister channel offers a ton of new programming that will also make you want to cook, but maybe never actually do it (7AM, Cooking Channel) network premiere

Clint Eastwood Birthday Marathon – Dude is 80! Dear Clint, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, You look like a monkey … hey, maybe the one that co-starred with you! To celebrate, TCM unspools nine Eastwood flicks (including ‘Dirty Harry,’ ‘Kelly’s Heroes’ and ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,” but not, sadly ‘Every Which Way But Loose’), plus the documentary ‘The Eastwood Factor’ (8AM, TCM)

‘America: The Story of Us’ - We’re assuming that when this fantastic miniseries hits DVD in September, it will become a must-have for high school history classes. Tonight’s series wrap up takes us through the space race, the Cold War, the Challenger tragedy and 9/11 (9PM, History) series finale

‘Cake Boss’ – Buddy bakes a cake for the new Joisey governor, and for his wife’s birthday, but is surprised when his mom makes an announcement about her involvement at Carlos Bakery (9PM, TLC) season 3 premiere

‘Hoarders’ – In a new ep, a woman’s hubby moves out when he’s unable to continue dealing with her piles of junk and 60 (60!) birds, while the 10PM episode gives the ‘where are they now’ treatment to a few season one hoarders (9 and 10PM, A&E)

‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ – No, not a new season yet. But the show’s first five hilarious seasons begin airing on Comedy Central (in a two-hour block, every Monday night), and any chance to see ‘The Nightman Cometh’ again is one not to be missed. Remember people: You’re a master of karate and friendship for everyone! (9PM, Comedy Central)

‘Tough Love: Couples’ – Believe it or not, some of these people are gettin’ hitched (9PM, VH1) season 1 finale

‘Dad Camp’ - Like the title says, unprepared daddies-to-be are sent to baby boot camp (10PM, VH1) series premiere

‘True Beauty’ – Former ‘Queer Eye’ guy Carson Kressley, Vanessa Minnillo and Beth Ostrosky Stern are the judges in this season, as contestants who think they’re competing in physical beauty pageants find out where they rate on the tool scale (10PM, ABC) season 2 premiere

Fall TV Diversity Scorecard

Undercovers on NBCSure, we have a black president now, but do you want to see a real sign of racial progress? Watch NBC’s ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’-like spy drama ‘Undercovers’ this fall, a drama that has cast as its leads two black performers (Boris Kodjoe and Gugu Mbatha-Raw) for no apparent reason other than their talent and attractiveness.

All right, maybe having a network drama with two people of color as leads doesn’t look much like progress to you, but this is network TV we’re talking about, which, as a mirror of the nation, is notoriously slow to respond to social trends (like, say, the changing complexion of America). We’re also talking about a TV landscape in which some of the shows with the most racially diverse casts (‘Heroes,’ ‘Lost,’ ‘Law & Order’) have just gone off the air.

Judging by what we know of the fall’s TV fare, as announced by the networks last week, there are hardly any shows with all-white casts, but how many of them have leading roles for actors of color, and how many just have the occasional best-friend or supportive-coworker roles?

Dennis Hopper Dies At 74

Really?? You’re getting out of control, 2010:

Dennis Hopper, whose portrayals of drug-addled, often deranged misfits in the landmark films “Easy Rider,” “Apocalypse Now” and “Blue Velvet” drew on his early out-of-control experiences as part of a new generation of Hollywood rebel, died at his home in Venice, Calif., on Saturday. He was 74.

According to the Times obituary written by Edward Wyatt, Mr. Hopper died from complications of prostate cancer. His death was first reported by Reuters. (- NY Times)

Well, this blows. I guess you could argue that with what he’s done to his body in the past, it’s amazing he lasted to 74, but this story still came out of nowhere (Hopper once joked during the ESPY Awards about a decade ago, “I never would’ve made it as a baseball player — with the amount of drugs I’ve done in my life, I would’ve been suspended, like, three or four games.”)

I’ll always have a personal affinity for Mr. Hopper, too, after a lifetime of people asking me “Is he your uncle” and me saying “Yes” and them saying “No he’s not!” and me saying “You’re right, he’s not, then why’d you ask?” (Sometimes people try to sound cooler by asking if Edward Hopper is my uncle, but I digress). On behalf of the D. Hoppers in the world, he’ll be missed.

Bad Memorial Day Weekend for pop culture. Feel free to leave any Dennis Hopper reactions in the comments.
