Is it wrong that I don’t hate ABC’s Crash Course?

ABC's Crash CourseABC’s newest stunt game show Crash Course looks exactly like the kind of show that bloggers and critics watch just so they could put their “Suck Extinguishers” to good use.

And yet 45 minutes of TV viewing later, I’m not even feeling the need to break the protective glass. On the surface, it appears to be just another reality/game show with typical contestants having their ids scared for life for cash and/or prizes and most of it is just that.

And even though it met those stereotypical expectations, I still didn’t hate it. Part of me actually kind of (gulp) enjoyed it. Did I just swallow my brains along with my pride?

No News is Broom News

There’s the famous old saying that goes “Cleanliness is next to Godliness”. But when a “magical” broom managed to balance itself on its bristles in the middle of an Alabama store, there was really only one explanation. Physics? Of course not. Design? Heathen. This is God’s Broom. And the local news station was there to report.

On a related note, you’ll find me selling these “God Brooms” all throughout the Bible Belt, until next year, when you’ll find me here.

More to Love: Broken Bikes and Broken Farts

Picture 2-277

Love can be both fat and crazy.

This week on more to love, Luke takes Christian and Mandy out dancing, because he is racist. Then he takes Malissa on a tandem bike, because he is prejudiced against bikes. Then, he takes the rest of the girls to the beach because he hates the moon. Yes, this shit gets REAL, and fast. Bikes are broken. Hearts are broken. Farts are sounded. Well, they’re sounded in the large laser light show ampatheatre that is my mind.

George W. Bush canceled Reading Rainbow

LeVar Burton, host of 'Reading Rainbow' Did you watch Reading Rainbow yesterday? If you missed it, that’s too bad, because PBS’ third-longest running show (behind only Sesame Street and Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood) ended its 26 year run on Friday.

According to NPR, the children’s program is being cut from the PBS stable of educational programming because of … wait for it … the Bush administration.

Terminator’s Garret Dillahunt lands role on Burn Notice

Garret Dillahunt, burn notice, terminatorSummer Glau isn’t the only Terminator alum heading to a high-profile show next season. The cool and creepy Garrett Dillahunt has landed a role on USA’s Burn Notice. Dillahunt will play Simon, Michael’s super smart new client, when the show returns in the winter.

It’s unclear whether this is a guest stint or a recurring role, but chances are good that Dillahunt will be sticking around for a while. The actor has made memorable guest stints on Life, CSI, and Law & Order: SVU, and critics praised his recent big screen performance in The Last House on the Left.

George Steinbrenner gets called on a foul

YES NetworkI’m not sure who will rejoice at this news more: Yankees or Mets fans. Long-time Yankees owner George Steinbrenner has been sued by a former colleague for breach of agreement regarding the YES Network. This is another in a long line of broken and burned bodies left in Steinbrenner’s wake.

Accusing Steinbrenner of lying is a bit like accusing the the Pope of being Catholic. Just ask Billy Martin, Dave Winfield, Reggie Jackson, etc., etc., etc. I’d be more surprised if he told the truth. Simply on the basis of who George Steinbrenner is and how he behaves, I’m pretty sure that Robert Gutkowski is justified in his claim.

Mind you, Steinbrenner is pushing 80. He’s not quite the powerhouse he used to be. If you want to sue him, now’s the time (as opposed to even 10 years ago). Perhaps they should get Larry David (who did the Steinbrenner impression back on Seinfeld) to fill in for him at the trial.

MTV’s star-studded West Side Story parody

Russell_Brand_MTV_VMA_awardsHow do you pump up the viewership for a music award show on a network that used to be all about music but lately has been all about reality TV and nasty scandals? Well, apparently MTV has decided to go retro and keep it funny. To promote the upcoming 2009 Video Awards, MTV has created a West Side Story parody, not too different from the brilliant solo turn by Neil Patrick Harris at last June’s Tony Awards.

The commercial is a mixed bag. Taylor Swift proves that she has the real goods as a singer, doing the toughest part of the “Tonight” quintet. Ne-Yo’s dance turn is more of a salute to Michael Jackson than an homage to composers Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim. And Katy Perry’s rooftop bit reinforces the fact that she’s funny and playful.

Right now on Cinematical

cinematical logoThe folks at our sister site Cinematical are working hard to give you news and reviews of the best — and worst — the silver screen has to offer. Here are some of their musings on the latest blockbusters, indies, and everything in between:

  • I do not ever, under any circumstances, wish to see Andy Griffith’s “O” face. But if you’re into that kind of thing, here ya go.
  • For all of you Twihards out there: Cinematical has new images from New Moon.
  • “Okay. It’s like The Blob, but you know, without the blob thing. But it’s totally a remake of The Blob. Get it?” It sounds like that’s kind of how Rob Zombie’s movie pitch went.
  • I’m going to see The Final Destination this weekend. I have never seen any of the other movies in the series, and I do not give a single crap about the “plot” or “characters.” The point is, it is in 3-D and there are crazy body parts flying around and people getting killed in very awkward ways. Movie WIN.
  • Cinematical is not very happy about the Heathers TV show that is in the works.
